What is The Math Map?
The Math Map is a classical, Christian math curriculum developed by Leigh Bortins and Classical Conversations. It is studied over the course of thirty weeks and organized into thirty consumable, self-contained weekly booklets that include lesson pages, reference charts, and solutions to every problem.
Why was The Math Map created?
This curriculum was designed to help families and local communities around the globe develop:
- Fluency with the language of mathematics in order to see the unseen
- Mathematical unity within families and communities in order to support one another
- The habits of classical mathematicians as students study to know God and to make Him known
What is being released in 2026?
In 2026, the remaining Foundations domains are being released: Naturals, Decimals, and Reals. Additionally, the next Challenge level — Binomials, correlating to Challenge I — is also releasing. With all Foundations domains now available in print, full-size digital versions will no longer be available in The Math Map Companion on CC Connected.
How is The Math Map used in local Classical Conversations communities?
The Math Map is the resource used in the Logic Strand for classical skills practice. Students are expected to bring Complex for Challenge A, Monomials for Challenge B, and Binomials for Challenge I. In community, tutors and students practice classical skills through the dialectic and are encouraged to become rhetorical in key foundational concepts of mathematics.
Do families need any additional supplies?
This curriculum is designed to be consumable, so the only supply required is a pencil. Families may also choose to reuse booklets by having their children work from separate paper. Flashcards are also available to support student success.
How is The Math Map classical?
It is classical in three key ways. First, there is a clearly defined and communicated body of knowledge. Second, the grammar of mathematics is introduced at a young age, with repetition building familiarity as students approach the rhetorical stage. Third, the curriculum is designed to be explored comparatively — using the fifteen tools of classical learning to gain knowledge, build understanding, and develop wisdom.
How is The Math Map Christian?
The purpose of this curriculum is to help families discover God through mathematics. Each booklet includes a piece of art, a quotation, and a reflection drawn from a variety of sources, including the Bible. Each booklet also opens with an essay connecting the mathematical topic to the art, quotation, and reflection — helping students and families see the spiritual connections in what they are studying.
What support is available for tutors, parents, and students?
Challenge A, B, and I tutors receive multiple layers of support from The Math Map team. Leigh Bortins hosts book clubs on LeighBortins.com discussing The Math Map, available live or recorded. Ongoing support is available through CC Connected forums moderated by The Math Map Curriculum Assistant.
